Think shared scooters and bikes are just for fun? Veo’s latest rider survey may change your mind.
National gas prices have reached $4 a gallon, and more than $5 in some states – bringing many Americans to think twice before they get behind the wheel.
Veo wanted to understand how rising gas costs are changing the way our riders get around, so we sent out a short rider survey. Riders had a lot to say:
“Gas is sky high!”
“Gas prices are getting ridiculous.”
“It’s crazy out there.”
Over 2,000 riders responded with a clear message: high gas prices are pushing them to trade car trips for scooter and bike trips.
One rider summed it up perfectly: “Higher gas prices = more scooter rides.”
When Gas Prices Go Up, More People Ride
Nearly three-quarters (73%) of riders said shared scooters and bikes are cheaper than driving when gas prices are high. Riders mentioned everyday trips like commuting and running errands no longer feel worth the cost of gas, parking, and traffic.
And riders are acting on that feeling: More than two-thirds (68%) of riders with access to a car said higher gas prices have led them to replace car trips with shared scooter or bike trips in the past month. About one-third (34%) said they have done so frequently.
Learning from Car-free Riders
We also heard from riders who do not own or have access to a car. More than half (52%) of these riders said they do not have a car simply because it’s too expensive.
Car-free riders shared tips for those trying to drive less:
“Plan ahead and make sure you live somewhere with good public transportation, like buses or trains. Walking or biking can also help for shorter distances. It’s important to organize your schedule so you don’t miss rides, and having apps for maps or ride-sharing can make things easier.”
“[Going car free] is a good idea as long as everything you need for everyday life is within a few miles of you.”
“Trains, buses and Veos will take you a long way, literally.”
Veo Memberships Make Riding More Affordable
Gas prices may go up and down, but the need for affordable transportation doesn’t.
